Description
In 1950, Rīga Medical Institute was established on the basis of the Faculty of Medicine of the State University of Latvia. Having grown out of Rīga Medical Institute, Rīga Stradiņš University offers medicine and health care studies.
Today Rīga Stradiņš University trains not only doctors, dentists, pharmacists and nurses, but also specialists in rehabilitation, public healthcare, social sciences and law. University focuses on specialities, which are greatly needed by the society and the state.
In the university there are 65 study programs from which 11 are taught in English, 8331 students from which 2032 are international students from 50 countries.
Department of Welfare and Social Work in Riga Stradiņš University was founded in 2005 called Academic School of Social Work which firstly was under Faculty of Rehabilitation. Since 2014 Department of Welfare and Social Work is under Faculty of Public Health and Social Welfare.
Students can acquire social work education at bachelor, master and PhD study programs.
There is one international master study program “Social Work with Children and Youth” (http://www.rsu.lv/eng/study-here/post-graduate/social-work-with-children-and-youth) which is organized in partnership with Mykolas Romeris University (Lithuania). Students from all over the world can apply for this study program.
PhD study program is called “Social Policy and Social Work Organization”.
Each academic year students and teachers participate in Erasmus+ mobility program. Department of Welfare and Social Work have partnership with Saxion University of Applied Sciences, Artesis Hogeschool Antwerpen, Mainz Catholic University of Applied Sciences, University of Hradec Králové, University of Ljubljana, University of Zagreb, Complutense University of Madrid, etc.
