Undergraduate
The Department has two separate sections, each running its own BA program. The Sociology section offers BAs in Sociology, Human Resources and Anthropology. The Social Work section offers majoring in Child Protection, Clinical Counseling, Risk-Group Work and Probation.
The Department adopted in 2005 the Bologna educational structure: BA – three years; MA – two years; PhD – three years.
Master Programs
The Department offers a total of 15 Master programs, each program requiring 120 ECTS. The length of the programs is two years (four semesters). The Master programs are:

Research
There are several research centers subordinated to the Department, among which:
- Romanian Social Data Archive acts as an international hub of sociological data base archiving.
- Center of Research and Innovation in Social Services is the main research center of the Social Work Section.
The Department has been granted several European Social Fund (ESF) grants since 2009: one of them with workplace discrimination, another one with sociological training and the labor market and another one with the reform of doctoral schools in Romania.

Students
There are around 3000 students enrolled in the BA, MA and PhD programs of the Department. Facilities for students include a cafeteria, a bookstore, free Wi-Fi, about 100 computer stations, a large in-house library and electronic subscription to various Sociology, Social Sciences, Social Work and Anthropology journals. Yearly, there are about 20 Erasmus scholarships for universities from Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Denmark, France, Germany, Italy, Netherlands, Spain, Sweden and Turkey.
Admissions
Each year there are about 250 first year students for the Sociology Section and about 200 first year students for the Social Work Section. Out the 250 first year sociology students, about 50 enroll in the Anthropology and another 50 students opt for the Human Resources.
History of the Social Work Section
 1929-1952 – Social Work was introduced as discipline at the College of Social Work “Princess Ileana”, led by sociologist Henri H. Stahl. The College was based on a four years structure.1952-1969 – The College of Social Work was reduced to a post high-school education based on a three years structure. 1969 – Social work education was completely prohibited, assuming that social problems may be solved through administrative-bureaucratic and political devices, based on the ideology of the „humanist nature” of the Communist system. 1990 – Social work education, structured as a three years education, is re-established inside the Department of Sociology, Psychology and Educational Sciences. 1992 – Social work education is transformed into a Section of Social Work inside the same department, based on a four years structure. The Social Work and Applied Social Psychology Section is established, running specialized social work educational programs at B.A. and graduate level (Masters’ and PhD). 1994 – The Doctoral program in the discipline of Sociology with a Social Work specialization was established. 1998 – A series of new Master programs were established in the areas of European Social Policies; Management of Social and Health Services; Community Administration of Justice; Prevention and Control of Drug Addiction. 1999 – The establishment of Higher Education College of Community Social Work, based on a three years structure, short term higher education. 1999 – The Department of Sociology, Psychology and Educational Sciences of the University of Bucharest is reorganized into two separate and independent departments (Department of Sociology and Social Work and the Department of Psychology and Educational Sciences). |
